Dr. Jennifer Baumgartner is the Joan Pender McManus Distinguished Professor in Early Childhood Education in the Lutrill & Pearl Payne School of Education at Louisiana State University, where she teaches in the PK–3 teacher certification and early childhood education graduate programs. Her scholarship explores teaching, learning and educator well-being through a relational and ecological lens, with particular interests in teacher stress and coping, child development, teacher education and the ways educators translate theory and knowledge into practice.
Across her research and teaching, Dr. Baumgartner is interested in the experiences and stories of educators and what they can teach us about educational practice. She leads the Louisiana Early Childhood Teacher Oral History Project, an ongoing effort to document, preserve, and learn from the experiences of early childhood educators.
Her work also extends broadly into teaching and learning in higher education. As Faculty Chair of LSU’s Communication across the Curriculum program, she works with faculty across disciplines to strengthen teaching, communication-intensive pedagogy and student learning. Her faculty development work emphasizes relationships, reflection, meaningful communication and the creation of learning experiences that help students make connections and grow.
Across these areas, Dr. Baumgartner’s work is grounded in a belief that relationships are foundational to learning and that investing in educators can strengthen the classrooms, communities, and institutions they help create.
