Overview
A passport to global perspectives & lifelong learning.
As cultures and economies are increasingly interconnected, the presence of globalization is visible in nearly every aspect of life and work. Global workforce mobility has led to workplaces around the globe becoming more diverse with people bringing their various worldviews and identities to work. Organizations are also increasingly interacting with stakeholders from multiple cultural backgrounds and international contexts. Still, much of the workforce is not competent enough to work in globalized and cross-cultural environments. There is a lack of global leadership in many organizations today.
Preparing students and professionals in every industry to become global leaders who can face global challenges in today’s organizations requires specialized training and focus on global leadership development. It is incumbent on leaders and human resource development professionals whether in higher education, organizations, or communities to enable and empower others to think at a global level and use their knowledge and skills to address the global challenges they face.

Global Leadership in Thailand
Wintersession 2023 will find you in Thailand as part of the Global Leadership Program with Dr. Oliver Crocco and Dr. Edward Gibbons. You and your classmates will be immersed in Chiang Mai, the largest city in Northern Thailand. There you will explore the language, culture, and history of Thailand and how these components affect the workplace.
Whether studying LHRD 3723, LHRD 4901, or LHRD 4809, students will explore topics related to global leadership and HRD in Thailand.

- December 30: Depart Bangkok; Overnight train to Chiang Mai
- December 31: Arrive in Chiang Mai; Free day; Optional New Year’s activities!
- January 1-5: Course activities and instruction in Chiang Mai
- January 5-7: Free weekend – No mandatory course activities; optional activities provided
- January 8-11: Course activities and instruction in Chiang Mai
- January 11: Farewell dinner; Travel back to Bangkok (evening)

- LHRD 3723 – COURSE DESCRIPTION
- This course provides a survey of leadership theory, concepts and research; emphasis on understanding the foundational concepts of modern leadership.
- LHRD 3723 – GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:- Define and analyze the role of leadership in management of people and organizations
- Summarize and interpret skills and practices associated with effective leadership
- Describe and evaluate perspectives on leadership, leadership competencies, and leader roles
- Evaluate personal leadership skills and develop a leadership development plan

- Reflect on the role that culture plays in organizational leadership
- Describe how leaders who work in international and multi-cultural contexts navigate cultural challenges
- LHRD 4901 – COURSE DESCRIPTION
- An examination of contemporary research, practice, and development issues related to leadership in international organizations.
- LHRD 4901 – GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:- Analyze frameworks of global leadership
- Describe how culture, history, religion, and language influence global leadership in organizations
- Identify global challenges faced by leaders in for-profit, NGOs, and educational organizations
- Define the particular global leader characteristics that drive effective leadership processes in international organizations
- Apply the concepts, approaches, models, and processes of global leadership to their own global leadership development
- Study Abroad-Related Objectives:
- Reflect on one’s personal development as it relates to the Thai cultural context and how learning about that context has influenced this process
- Consider how the things that make Thailand unique culturally, politically, linguistically, etc. influence its organizations and their visions/missions
- LHRD 4809 – COURSE DESCRIPTION
- This is an independent study course for advanced students (juniors and seniors) or graduate students with approval from their advisors to study an advanced topic related to leadership and human resource development. In particular, students interested in this option should consider ways that the Thai context could enhance their particular independent study topic. For example, in the past students explored leadership in higher education institutions in Thailand. This also built off the expertise of Dr. Crocco whose research explores leadership challenges in higher education in Thailand. In particular, Dr. Crocco is interested in exploring issues related to Global Leadership in Thailand and the LSU Pentagon Priorities of agriculture, biotechnology, energy, defense, and coast.
- LHRD 4809 – GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES
- Course objectives for LHRD 4809 will be determined on a case-by-case basis with the student and Dr. Crocco with the approval of the student’s advisor.
