Global Engineering

The Engineering profession in general, and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in particular, transcends national boundaries, especially in today’s day and age where globalization is pervasive. Many corporations who have routinely hired our graduates from LSU have operations and career opportunities abroad in many countries and continents. For this reason, they are interested in hiring Engineers that have some international experience under their belt, even as students, and the Geaux Global program presents an opportunity to those of you who are willing to develop this special qualification.

Geaux Global

The MIE Department at LSU offers four types of international experiences to eligible ME and IE students.

  • Semester of Study Abroad in Lyon, France or Torino, Italy.
  • Global Engineering Immersions  in Lyon, France.
  • Hosting a French student for a week.
  • Encounter Engineering in Europe (offered by the College of Engineering).

The MIE Department has a limited number of scholarships in support of international experiences.

Semester of Study in Lyon, France

Opportunities to take courses for credit towards your BSME degree are available at the 'Ecole Polytechnique Universitaire Lyon (Polytech), the Engineering School of the University Claude Bernard, Lyon I in Lyon, France.

Lyon is the second largest city in France both in terms of population and industrialization and reputedly the capital of gastronomy in France. It is also the capital of the Rhône-Alpes region located at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers. It has a long history (back to pre-Roman times) and the old part of the city has retained its medieval and renaissance characters.

Semester of Study in Torino, Italy

Opportunities to take courses for credit towards your BSME degree are available at the ME School of the Torino Polytechnic (PoliTo), located in Torino Italy, is available each Spring semester (next opportunity Spring 2016).

Studying abroad at the Politecnico di Torino also provides an opportunity to complete an International Automotive Minor by taking the necessary electives there under their excellent Automotive Engineering program.

Torino is the fourth largest city in Italy in terms of population, and is a significant industrial, business and cultural center. It is the capital of the Piedmont region, has a long history (back to pre-Roman times) and was the first capital of the Italian state.

Global Engineering Immersion in Lyon, France

Immersion Experience at the 'Ecole Polytechnique Universitaire Lyon (Polytech), which is the Engineering School of the University Claude Bernard, Lyon I in Lyon, France. This usually takes place over LSU’s spring break. The emersion experience may be subsidized by a scholarship (up to $500 per ME or IE participant) if you qualify.

The visit tentatively includes: being hosted by local students (room accommodation), getting to know French students in your study area, visiting with faculty, visiting/attending classes and laboratories, possibly visiting a local French company/industry, exploring the local cuisine, attending one or more cultural events, sight-seeing in and around the city.

Scholarships for International Experiences

For ME majors, a limited number of scholarships are available for Study Abroad thanks to the generosity of ME alumni Mr. Tony Harper ($1,500-level) and Mr. Jack Rettig ($2,750-level). These scholarships will be awarded after the Study Abroad has been successfully completed.

For ME and IE majors, a limited number of International Immersion Scholarships are available thanks to the generosity of ME alumnus Mr. Jack Rettig ($500-level). These scholarships will be awarded after the International Immersion visit at Polytech (Lyon FR) has been completed and after submitting an essay describing the experience.

Host a Foreign Student

ME and IE majors are given the opportunity to host a student from Polytech (Lyon FR) during their reciprocal immersion visit at LSU. This is an excellent way to make a friend in Lyon FR and maintain a relationship for the future. It is also an excellent way to showcase LSU and the spirit of hospitality that is inherent in Louisiana. Typically LSU students who are hosted by French students at Polytech reciprocate by hosting them, or others, when they come to LSU.

Encounter Engineering in Europe

You can spend part of the summer in Germany in an immersion experience and earn some engineering credit. For more information and to apply please go to https://abroad.lsu.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=programs.ViewProgram&Program_ID=10054 or contact Ms. Paige Davis (pdavis3@lsu.edu).
