Gov. John Bel Edwards, LSU President William F. Tate IV to Celebrate Completion of Huey P. Long Field House Restoration Project

BATON ROUGE – On Tuesday, October 24, the LSU College of Human Sciences & Education hosted Governor John Bel Edwards and LSU leaders at a ribbon cutting ceremony, celebrating the Huey P. Long Field House restoration project. 

Through the capital outlay process, Governor John Bel Edwards and the Louisiana Legislature invested $26 million dollars for this project. The State of Louisiana’s investment in the Huey P. Long Field House is a reinvestment into our people and our economy. The restoration also includes $6.35 million in corporate and private donations. The renovation includes 106,451 square feet, a new four-story infill with gross square footage of 23,980, four 40-seat classrooms, one 60-seat classroom, one 150-seat auditorium and 11,356 net square feet of research laboratories in the areas of motor behavior, exercise physiology, and behavioral, psychological and pedagogical sciences.

The Huey P. Long Field House was completed in 1932 at a cost of approximately $1 million and served as LSU’s first student union. Building facilities such as this on university campuses during the 1930s became a trend across the country as universities sought to provide recreation and social centers to help recruit and retain students. Here at LSU, the Huey P. Long Field House served a multitude of functions. The student union areas provided amenities such as a soda fountain, a plush student lounge, a post office, a barber shop and beauty parlor, and cafeteria. Today, the field house is home to the College of Human Sciences & Education which includes education, information studies, kinesiology, leadership and human resource development, and social work.
