Composited Program Statistics
In this section of our website, we provide some key composited statistics regarding our program, including for example data on admissions, graduations, and placement rates. The composited statistics are provided separately for the following education programs:
- MS in Medical Physics and Health Physics (Concentration in Medical Physics). This degree program is accredited by CAMPEP, Inc.
- MS in Medical Physics and Health Physics (Concentration in Health Physics).
- PhD in Physics (Concentration in Medical Physics). This degree program is accredited by CAMPEP, Inc.
- Post-Doctoral Certificate Training Program in Medical Physics. This certificate program is accredited by CAMPEP, Inc.
For brevity, we only list composited statistics from 2007 onwards. Yet it is noteworthy that the program has been conferring degrees since the early 1960’s, at which time the emphasis was on nuclear science. The focus shifted to health physics and then medical physics in the 1980’s.
Between 1980 and the present (June, 2021), 154 students completed our program. 133 of these were in Medical Physics (118 MS, 14 PhD, and 2 PDC). 19 students completed an MS degree with a concentration in Health Physics. The majority of our medical physics students pursue residency training after they complete their degree; our graduates have an exceptionally high placement rate. Most of our medical physics students pass Part I of the American Board of Radiology professional certification examination during their studies at LSU. Many of our current and former health physics students have pursued certification by the American Board of Health Physics. The vast majority of our graduates are board certified. In the tables below, the numbers of students who passed any part of a board certification exam includes currently enrolled and former students.
Our graduates have successfully found employment at prestigious institutions across the U.S., including Johns Hopkins University, Yale University, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Washington University, Mayo Clinic, Medical University of South Carolina, Loma Linda University, University of North Carolina, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, and others.
Table 1. Composited statistics for the MS in Medical Physics and Health Physics (Medical Physics concentration) since 2007, when the degree program initially received accreditation. The data listed in this table corresponds to students with a concentration in Medical Physics. This is the CAMPEP-accredited track of our MS program (see Table 2 for statistics on the Health Physics track).
