Refills not Landfills

 Refills not Landfills is an event hosted by Campus Sustainability in the fall to give away 300 reusable water bottles on campus to encourage students to reduce their use of single-use plastics. In order to receive a free water bottle, students are asked to sign the "Geaux Green Pledge" to promise to help their campus community reach its sustainability goals. In 2018, 618 students, faculty, and staff signed the Geaux Green Pledge.

History of "Refills not Landfills"

Refills not Landfills began in 2016 when LSU Campus Sustainability was awarded a grant from Keep Louisiana Beautiful. Since then, Campus Sustainability has hosted the event annually in the fall.

  The original Refills Not Landfills Campaign had several components:

  • A reusable bottle giveaway event for students, wherein 300 reusable bottles were given away.
  • The installation of 3 new Bottle Water Refill Stations on Campus.
  • Discounts at LSU Dining establishments for bringing a reusable bottle.
  • Prizes  possible for anyone who signed the Geaux Green pledge
  • Prizes possible for anyone who took a "selfie" while using a reusable mug on campus and tags LSU Sustainability on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. 

 

The Geaux Green Pledge

I pledge to reduce my environmental impact by using a reusable water bottle instead of single-use plastic bottles. I will make an effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle other plastics to contribute to my campus community's sustainability goals.
