Fellowship Advising
The Office of Fellowship Advising helps Ogden Honors College students pursue nationally competitive fellowships through one-on-one mentorship, essay support, and interview prep tailored to each applicant. Many students begin working with our office as early as sophomore year, since the strongest applications take time to build.
The Office of Fellowship Advising has helped Honors College students win prestigious national awards to help them pursue their goals, including the Fulbright Fellowship, the Astronaut Scholarship, the Goldwater Scholarship, the Udall Undergraduate Scholarship, and more.
What is a Fellowship?
Generally, fellowships are short-term opportunities lasting from a few months to several years that focus on the professional development of the fellow, sponsored by a specific organization seeking to expand leadership in their field. Fellowship programs can be designed to support a range of activities including graduate study in a specific field, research to advance work on a particular issue, developing a new community-based organization or initiative, training and reflection to support the fellow's growth, and opportunities to further explore a particular field of study.
Fellowships vs. Scholarships
Scholarships (like the Stamps or Chancellor's Alumni Scholarships) fund your cost of attendance at LSU. Fellowships are separate, nationally competitive awards funded outside of LSU that support research, graduate study, or professional development after or alongside your degree. Many, like the Fulbright Fellowship and Goldwater Scholarship, have the word "scholarship" in their names but require an LSU nomination before you apply. That's where we come in.
Why Apply?
Training and Professional Development
Fellowship programs are known for their commitment to the professional development of individual fellows and often include intensive training. Key elements of this training might include academic seminars to develop frameworks and apply theory, in-depth research and analysis of a particular issue area, and a broad curriculum of skills development which may include leadership, community organizing, public speaking, grant writing, and media relations.
Experiential Learning
This experiential learning component varies depending upon the fellowship program. Some fellowships are structured to provide significant work experiences, and fellows are often expected to take on a great deal of responsibility quickly. Generally, fellows are provided with unique experiences that are not typically available to someone starting out in an entry-level position.
