Course in Video Ethnography
This graduate course is taught annually, usually with a maximum of five students. The course is offered under the SOCL 7213: Specialized Topics in Social Science Methods category. The object of the course is simple: make your own nonfiction film. Enrolled students are only required to attend a handful of mandatory classes. Once students have an approved project, most work takes place in groups of two and three as editing takes precedence over shooting.
The course satisfies 3 credit hours of the sociology graduate requirement in social science methods.
Among the resources for the course, each student is provided with filming supplies (e.g., camera, microphone, tripod, etc).
For a general introduction to video ethnography, please see text used in the course: Video Ethnography in Practice.
